يبدو أن البطاقة الحمراء التي رُفعت على مهاجم المنتخب الأمريكي فولارين بالوغون «القضية» أوقعت خلافاً كبيراً بين رئيس الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم «فيفا» جياني إنفانتينو، ورئيس الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم ألكسندر تشيفرين، الذي قاطع الحضور بنهائي كأس العالم 2026 بشكل مفاجئ، في ظل تصاعد حدة الخلاف بين كرة القدم الأوروبية والفيفا.

وتغيّب تشيفرين عن مباراة إسبانيا التي انتهت بفوزها 1-0 على الأرجنتين في الوقت الإضافي في نيوجيرسي، على خلفية قضية فولارين بالوغون.

وكان من المتوقع أن يحضر تشيفرين المباراة النهائية إلى جانب رئيس الفيفا جياني إنفانتينو، لكنه تعمّد مقاطعتها.

وتدهورت العلاقات بين الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم، ونظيره الأوروبي، منذ أن ألغى الفيفا عقوبة الإيقاف التلقائي لمباراة واحدة المفروضة على بالوغون.

وسُمح لمهاجم الولايات المتحدة بالمشاركة أساسياً ضد بلجيكا في دور الـ16، رغم طرده أمام البوسنة والهرسك، بعد مكالمة هاتفية من دونالد ترمب إلى الفيفا.

وبدلاً من ذلك، علّق الفيفا العقوبة لمدة عام بموجب المادة 27 من قانون الانضباط.

وانتقد العالم بشدة هذه الخطوة، وردّ الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم (يويفا) بغضب إلى جانب الاتحاد البلجيكي لكرة القدم.

ووصف اليويفا تأجيل الحظر بأنه «غير مسبوق، وغير مفهوم، وغير مبرر»، وحذّر الفيفا من أنه «تجاوز الخط الأحمر».

واشتد الجدل بعد أن كشف الرئيس الأمريكي أنه تحدث مع إنفانتينو بشأن قضية بالوغون قبل اتخاذ القرار، لكن الفيفا يصرّ على أن لجنة الانضباط تصرفت باستقلالية.

وتأتي مقاطعة تشيفرين بعد أيام فقط من مطالبة منظمة حقوق الإنسان «فيرسكوير» اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية بالتحقيق في دور إنفانتينو في قضية بالوغون.

وذكرت صحيفة «the times» أن قرار تشيفرين بالغياب عن المباراة النهائية يعكس اتساع الفجوة بين أقوى هيئتين في عالم كرة القدم.

وتتجاوز التوترات الآن قضية بالوغون بكثير، إذ تصادم الطرفان بشأن خطط الفيفا لتوسيع كأس العالم إلى 64 فريقاً، وتغييرات بروتوكولات تقنية الفيديو المساعد للحكم (VAR)، وقواعد الانضباط، وتزايد الطابع التجاري للبطولة.

It seems that the red card issued to the American national team striker Folarin Balogun, referred to as "the case," has caused a significant rift between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, who unexpectedly boycotted the attendance at the 2026 World Cup final amid escalating tensions between European football and FIFA.

Čeferin was absent from the match where Spain won 1-0 against Argentina in extra time in New Jersey, against the backdrop of the Folarin Balogun case.

It was expected that Čeferin would attend the final alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, but he intentionally chose to boycott it.

The relationship between FIFA and its European counterpart has deteriorated since FIFA lifted the automatic one-match suspension imposed on Balogun.

The U.S. striker was allowed to start against Belgium in the Round of 16, despite being sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina, following a phone call from Donald Trump to FIFA.

Instead, FIFA suspended the penalty for a year under Article 27 of the Disciplinary Code.

The world harshly criticized this move, and UEFA responded angrily alongside the Belgian Football Association.

UEFA described the postponement of the ban as "unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustified," warning FIFA that it had "crossed the red line."

The controversy intensified after the U.S. president revealed that he had spoken with Infantino about the Balogun case before the decision was made, but FIFA insists that the Disciplinary Committee acted independently.

Čeferin's boycott comes just days after the human rights organization "FairSquare" called on the International Olympic Committee to investigate Infantino's role in the Balogun case.

The newspaper "The Times" reported that Čeferin's decision to miss the final reflects the widening gap between the two most powerful bodies in the world of football.

The tensions now extend far beyond the Balogun case, as the two sides have clashed over FIFA's plans to expand the World Cup to 64 teams, changes to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) protocols, disciplinary rules, and the increasing commercialization of the tournament.
