أعلن الديوان الأميري القطري، اليوم (الأحد)، وفاة الأمير الوالد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، عن عمر ناهز 74 عاماً، بعد مسيرة سياسية امتدت لعقود، قاد خلالها قطر منذ عام 1995، قبل أن يسلم مقاليد الحكم لنجله الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني عام 2013.
وقال الديوان الأميري في بيان: «بقلوب مؤمنة بقضاء الله وقدره، ينعى الديوان الأميري فقيد الوطن الكبير المغفور له بإذن الله صاحب السمو الأمير الوالد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، الذي وافته المنية صباح اليوم الأحد 27 محرم 1448هـ الموافق 12 يوليو 2026، عن عمر ناهز 74 عاماً». كما دعا الله أن يتغمد الفقيد بواسع رحمته، وأن يجزيه خير الجزاء على ما قدمه لوطنه وأمته العربية والإسلامية.
من قيادة الجيش إلى إمارة قطر
وُلد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني في الأول من يناير عام 1952، وتلقى تعليمه العسكري في الأكاديمية العسكرية الملكية البريطانية في ساندهيرست، التي تخرج فيها عام 1971، قبل أن يعود إلى قطر ليتدرج في المناصب العسكرية، حيث تولى قيادة اللواء المستقل، ثم رئاسة أركان الجيش، قبل تعيينه قائداً أعلى للقوات المسلحة ووزيراً للدفاع.
وفي عام 1977، بويع ولياً للعهد، وظل في هذا المنصب حتى عام 1995، كما تولى رئاسة المجلس الأعلى للتخطيط، وأسهم في إدارة ملفات التنمية والسياسات الاقتصادية، خصوصاً مع بدء تطوير قطاعي النفط والغاز.
تولي الحكم عام 1995
تولى الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني مقاليد الحكم في 27 يونيو 1995، وقاد البلاد لمدة 18 عاماً شهدت خلالها قطر تحولات واسعة في البنية التحتية والاقتصاد والسياسة الخارجية، قبل أن يتنازل طوعاً عن الحكم لنجله الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني في 25 يونيو 2013، في خطوة غير مسبوقة في المنطقة آنذاك.
أبرز المناصب
خلال مسيرته، تقلد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة عدداً من المناصب، من أبرزها:
* ولي عهد دولة قطر ووزير الدفاع عام 1977.
* رئيس المجلس الأعلى لرعاية الشباب بين عامي 1979 و1991.
* رئيس الهيئة العامة للشباب والرياضة.
* رئيس المجلس الأعلى للتخطيط.
* أمير دولة قطر بين عامي 1995 و2013.
إرث سياسي
يُعد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني أحد أبرز القادة الذين تركوا بصمة في تاريخ قطر الحديث، إذ ارتبط اسمه بمرحلة من التحولات الاقتصادية والتنموية، قبل أن يختتم مسيرته السياسية بتسليم السلطة إلى الجيل التالي، ليحمل منذ ذلك الحين لقب «الأمير الوالد» حتى وفاته اليوم عن عمر ناهز 74 عاماً.
The Qatari Amiri Diwan announced today (Sunday) the passing of the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, at the age of 74, after a political career that spanned decades, during which he led Qatar since 1995, before handing over the reins of power to his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in 2013.
The Amiri Diwan stated in a statement: “With hearts believing in God’s decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan mourns the great national figure, the late God willing, His Highness the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning, Sunday, 27 Muharram 1448 AH, corresponding to July 12, 2026, at the age of 74.” It also prayed for God to envelop the deceased in His vast mercy and to reward him abundantly for what he offered to his country and the Arab and Islamic nation.
From Military Leadership to the Emirate of Qatar
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was born on January 1, 1952, and received his military education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, graduating in 1971, before returning to Qatar to rise through military ranks, where he commanded the independent brigade, then served as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, before being appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense.
In 1977, he was appointed Crown Prince, holding this position until 1995. He also chaired the Supreme Council for Planning and contributed to managing development and economic policy files, especially with the beginning of the development of the oil and gas sectors.
Assuming Power in 1995
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani assumed power on June 27, 1995, and led the country for 18 years during which Qatar witnessed extensive transformations in infrastructure, economy, and foreign policy, before voluntarily relinquishing power to his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on June 25, 2013, in an unprecedented move in the region at that time.

Throughout his career, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa held several positions, the most notable of which include:
* Crown Prince of the State of Qatar and Minister of Defense in 1977.
* Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth Welfare between 1979 and 1991.

* Chairman of the Supreme Council for Planning.
* Emir of the State of Qatar between 1995 and 2013.
Political Legacy
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is considered one of the most prominent leaders who left a mark on the history of modern Qatar, as his name is associated with a phase of economic and developmental transformations, before concluding his political career by handing over power to the next generation, earning him the title of “the Father Emir” until his passing today at the age of 74.
