فيما كان الديمقراطيون يخططون لاستثمار تراجع شعبية الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب بسبب الضغوط الاقتصادية وارتفاع تكاليف المعيشة، باتت الانقسامات الداخلية بين التيارين التقدمي والتقليدي تهدد فرص الحزب في انتخابات التجديد النصفي، وتضعف مساعيه لاستعادة الأغلبية في مجلس الشيوخ.

وتبرز الأزمة بوضوح في ولاية ماين، بعدما أعلن المرشح الديمقراطي لمجلس الشيوخ جراهام بلاتنر تعليق حملته وبدء إجراءات الانسحاب من السباق، عقب اتهامه بالاعتداء الجنسي، وهي اتهامات نفى صحتها. وطالب بلاتنر بأن يكون لأنصاره دور في اختيار المرشح البديل، معتبراً أن المقعد «يعود لشعب ولاية ماين»، في حين بدأ الحزب إعداد آلية لاختيار بديل قبل المهلة القانونية في 27 يوليو.

وكان بلاتنر يحظى بدعم الجناح التقدمي داخل الحزب، ما أثار مخاوف من صراع جديد حول هوية المرشح البديل، بين أنصار التوجه التقدمي والداعين إلى اختيار مرشح أكثر اعتدالاً قادر على منافسة السيناتورة الجمهورية سوزان كولينز.

ولا يقتصر الانقسام على ماين، إذ شهدت ولايات عدة صعود مرشحين مدعومين من الاشتراكيين الديمقراطيين في الانتخابات التمهيدية، من بينها كولورادو، حيث حققت المرشحة الجديدة ميلات كيروس فوزاً مفاجئاً على النائبة المخضرمة ديانا ديجيت.

وفي ميشيجان، يتنافس المرشحان هايلي ستيفنز، المدعومة من قيادة الحزب، وعبد السيد، المدعوم من النائبة ألكساندريا أوكاسيو كورتيز وعدد من التقدميين، على مقعد مجلس الشيوخ، وسط خلافات حول قضايا مثل العلاقة مع إسرائيل ومستقبل وزارة الأمن الداخلي، وهي ملفات تعكس التباينات المتزايدة داخل الحزب.

ويرى قادة في التيار التقليدي أن ترشيح شخصيات أكثر ميلاً إلى اليسار قد يصعّب الفوز في الانتخابات العامة، في ظل سعي الجمهوريين إلى تصويرهم على أنهم يمثلون تيارات «اشتراكية» متطرفة.

ورغم استمرار استياء الناخبين من أداء إدارة ترمب في ملفات الاقتصاد والسياسة الخارجية، لا تزال استطلاعات الرأي تمنح الديمقراطيين فرصة جيدة لاستعادة مجلس النواب، بينما تبقى معركة مجلس الشيوخ أكثر تعقيداً، إذ يحتاج الحزب إلى تحقيق مكسب صافٍ يبلغ أربعة مقاعد، ويُعد الفوز بمقعد "مين" أحد مفاتيح هذا الهدف.

وتستحضر الأزمة الحالية أيضاً تداعيات انتخابات 2024، عندما أدى انسحاب جو بايدن من السباق الرئاسي واختيار كامالا هاريس مرشحة للحزب من دون انتخابات تمهيدية جديدة إلى اعتراضات داخل المعسكر التقدمي، الذي يطالب اليوم بعملية اختيار أكثر شفافية وديمقراطية.

ويرى مراقبون أن استمرار الصراع بين أجنحة الحزب قد يبدد فرصة الديمقراطيين في استثمار تراجع شعبية الجمهوريين، إذا لم يتمكنوا من توحيد صفوفهم قبل انتخابات نوفمبر القادم.

While Democrats were planning to capitalize on the decline in popularity of U.S. President Donald Trump due to economic pressures and rising living costs, internal divisions between the progressive and traditional wings threaten the party's chances in the midterm elections and weaken its efforts to regain a majority in the Senate.

The crisis is clearly evident in Maine, after Democratic Senate candidate Graham Plattner announced the suspension of his campaign and the beginning of withdrawal procedures from the race, following allegations of sexual assault, which he denied. Plattner demanded that his supporters have a role in choosing the alternative candidate, considering that the seat "belongs to the people of Maine," while the party began preparing a mechanism to select a replacement before the legal deadline on July 27.

Plattner had the support of the progressive wing within the party, raising concerns about a new conflict over the identity of the alternative candidate, between supporters of the progressive direction and those advocating for a more moderate candidate capable of competing with Republican Senator Susan Collins.

The division is not limited to Maine, as several states have witnessed the rise of candidates backed by Democratic Socialists in the primaries, including Colorado, where newcomer Milat Kiros achieved a surprising victory over veteran Congresswoman Diana DeGette.

In Michigan, candidates Haley Stevens, supported by party leadership, and Abd Said, backed by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and several progressives, are competing for a Senate seat, amid disagreements over issues such as relations with Israel and the future of the Department of Homeland Security, reflecting the increasing disparities within the party.

Leaders in the traditional wing believe that nominating more left-leaning figures could complicate winning in the general elections, as Republicans seek to portray them as representing extreme "socialist" currents.

Despite ongoing voter dissatisfaction with the Trump administration's performance on economic and foreign policy issues, polls still give Democrats a good chance to regain the House of Representatives, while the Senate battle remains more complicated, as the party needs to achieve a net gain of four seats, with winning the "Maine" seat being one of the keys to this goal.

The current crisis also evokes the implications of the 2024 elections, when Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race and Kamala Harris's selection as the party's nominee without new primaries led to objections within the progressive camp, which today demands a more transparent and democratic selection process.

Observers believe that the ongoing conflict between the party's wings could squander the Democrats' opportunity to capitalize on the decline in Republican popularity if they cannot unify their ranks before the upcoming November elections.
