بين مرارة النزوح التي حرمتها من أبسط حقوقها، وبين بلوغ قمرة قيادة الطائرات التجارية، سطّرت الشابة العراقية كاثرين وسيم قصة نجاح ملهمة في أستراليا، بعدما تحولت من طفلة عانت الانقطاع عن التعليم إلى أول عراقية تحصل على رخصة الطيران التجاري في أستراليا، في إنجاز حظي باهتمام واسع داخل الجالية العربية.
وبدأت الحكاية بقرار فاجأ أسرتها عقب انتهاء المرحلة الثانوية، ليتحول إلى رحلة شاقة قادت العائلة من القلق إلى الفخر، وترسم ابنتهم نموذجاً لافتاً في الإصرار وتحقيق الطموح.
ولم يكن طريق كاثرين إلى قمرة القيادة مفروشاً بالورود، إذ بدأ من أصعب محطات حياتها، فبعد مغادرة العراق وهي في الثامنة من عمرها، أقامت مع أسرتها في تركيا لمدة عامين ونصف العام في ظروف صعبة تسببت في انقطاعها عن الدراسة، ما أثار قلق والدها على مستقبلها التعليمي.
ومع انتقال العائلة إلى أستراليا، عقدت كاثرين العزم على تعويض ما فاتها، وحققت تفوقاً أكاديمياً لافتاً، قبل أن تفاجئ والدها بطلب دراسة الطيران.
حلم الفجر
يقول والدها إن القرار كان مثيراً للقلق؛ نظراً إلى طبيعة مهنة الطيران وما تنطوي عليه من مسؤولية كبيرة، فضلاً عن احتمال الابتعاد عن الأسرة، إلا أن انضباط كاثرين وإصرارها خففا تلك المخاوف، إذ كانت تستيقظ قبل الفجر وتقضي ساعات طويلة في التدريب والاستعداد.
وجاءت أولى ثمار جهودها سريعاً، بعدما حققت 95% في أول اختبار للطيران، مؤكدة أن اختيارها لم يكن مجرد رغبة عابرة، بل مشروع حياة. ثم جاءت اللحظة الأكثر تأثيراً بالنسبة لوالدها عندما نفذت أول رحلة طيران منفردة، ويقول: «شعرت بمزيج من الخوف والدهشة والفخر وأنا أرى ابنتي تقود طائرة في السماء بمفردها».
..وعينها على بغداد
تطلب الحصول على رخصة الطيران التجاري تفرغاً كاملاً وتضحيات كبيرة، غير أن طموح كاثرين لم يتوقف عند ذلك، إذ عززت مسيرتها بحصولها على رخصة قيادة الطائرات متعددة المحركات (Multi-Engine Rating)، وهي خطوة متقدمة ترفع فرصها في العمل لدى كبرى شركات الطيران.
واليوم، يتداول العراقيون قصة كاثرين بوصفها نموذجاً للنجاح والإصرار، فيما يظل حلم والدها الأكبر أن تقود ابنته يوماً طائرة تجارية تقل مسافرين إلى بغداد، لتصبح أول طيارة عراقية تحلق بأبناء بلدها إلى سماء الوطن.
Between the bitterness of displacement that deprived her of her most basic rights and reaching the cockpit of commercial airplanes, the young Iraqi woman Katherine Waseem has written an inspiring success story in Australia, transforming from a child who suffered from educational disruption to the first Iraqi to obtain a commercial pilot license in Australia, an achievement that has garnered wide attention within the Arab community.
The story began with a decision that surprised her family after she finished high school, turning into a challenging journey that led the family from anxiety to pride, as their daughter became a remarkable model of determination and ambition.
Katherine's path to the cockpit was not paved with roses; it began from the most difficult stages of her life. After leaving Iraq at the age of eight, she lived with her family in Turkey for two and a half years under difficult circumstances that caused her to miss school, raising her father's concerns about her educational future.
With the family's move to Australia, Katherine was determined to make up for lost time, achieving remarkable academic excellence before surprising her father with her request to study aviation.
The Dawn Dream
Her father says that the decision was worrying due to the nature of the aviation profession and the significant responsibilities it entails, as well as the possibility of being away from the family. However, Katherine's discipline and determination alleviated those fears, as she would wake up before dawn and spend long hours training and preparing.
The first fruits of her efforts came quickly, as she achieved 95% in her first flight test, confirming that her choice was not just a fleeting desire, but a lifelong project. Then came the most impactful moment for her father when she completed her first solo flight, and he says: "I felt a mix of fear, amazement, and pride as I watched my daughter fly a plane in the sky by herself."
..With Her Eyes on Baghdad
Obtaining a commercial pilot license requires full dedication and significant sacrifices, yet Katherine's ambition did not stop there, as she enhanced her journey by obtaining a Multi-Engine Rating, a significant step that increases her chances of working for major airlines.
Today, Iraqis share Katherine's story as a model of success and determination, while her father's greatest dream remains for his daughter to one day pilot a commercial plane carrying passengers to Baghdad, becoming the first Iraqi female pilot to fly her fellow countrymen to the skies of their homeland.
