تحولت رحلة لتحدي أعلى قمة في أوروبا إلى مأساة دامية، بعدما باغتت عاصفة عنيفة مجموعة من المتسلقين على جبل إلبروس الروسي، لتخلف خمسة قتلى وتُصعّب على فرق الإنقاذ الوصول إلى جميع الضحايا وسط ظروف جوية قاسية.
وأفادت وكالة الإعلام الروسية بأن خمسة متسلقين من البوسنة والهرسك لقوا حتفهم على جبل إلبروس، أعلى قمة في أوروبا، بعدما حاصرتهم عاصفة شديدة أثناء صعودهم، فيما لا تزال جثامين ثلاثة منهم في موقع الحادث، بعد تعذر انتشالها بسبب سوء الأحوال الجوية.
وأعلنت وزارة الطوارئ الروسية أن فرق الإنقاذ تمكنت من انتشال جثماني متسلقين عُثر عليهما على ارتفاع يبلغ نحو 5350 متراً، كما نجحت في إنقاذ متسلقين آخرين جرى إجلاؤهما من الجبل ونقلهما إلى المستشفى لتلقي الرعاية الطبية.
ونقلت الوكالة عن فرع لجنة التحقيقات في روسيا الاتحادية بالمنطقة أن فرق الإنقاذ حددت مواقع جثامين ثلاثة متسلقين آخرين، إلا أن استمرار العاصفة والظروف الجوية الخطرة حال دون انتشالها حتى الآن.
ورغم أن السلطات الروسية لم تعلن رسمياً جنسيات الضحايا، فإن أجهزة إنفاذ القانون في المنطقة أكدت -وفق وكالة الإعلام الروسية- أن المتسلقين الذين لقوا مصرعهم يحملون جنسية البوسنة والهرسك.
ويُعد جبل إلبروس، الواقع في منطقة القوقاز جنوب روسيا، أعلى قمة في أوروبا بارتفاع يبلغ 5642 متراً، ويستقطب سنوياً آلاف المتسلقين، إلا أن تقلباته الجوية المفاجئة تجعله من أكثر الجبال خطورة، خصوصاً على المرتفعات الشاهقة.
A journey to challenge the highest peak in Europe turned into a bloody tragedy, as a violent storm unexpectedly hit a group of climbers on Mount Elbrus in Russia, resulting in five deaths and complicating rescue teams' efforts to reach all the victims amid harsh weather conditions.
The Russian news agency reported that five climbers from Bosnia and Herzegovina lost their lives on Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, after being trapped by a severe storm during their ascent, while the bodies of three of them remain at the accident site, as retrieval has been impossible due to the bad weather.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that rescue teams managed to retrieve the bodies of two climbers found at an altitude of about 5,350 meters, and successfully evacuated other climbers from the mountain and transported them to the hospital for medical care.
The agency quoted the regional branch of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation as saying that rescue teams identified the locations of the bodies of three other climbers, but the ongoing storm and dangerous weather conditions have prevented their retrieval so far.
Although Russian authorities have not officially announced the nationalities of the victims, law enforcement agencies in the region confirmed - according to the Russian news agency - that the deceased climbers hold the nationality of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mount Elbrus, located in the Caucasus region of southern Russia, is the highest peak in Europe at an elevation of 5,642 meters, attracting thousands of climbers each year; however, its sudden weather changes make it one of the most dangerous mountains, especially at high altitudes.
