The International Energy Agency confirmed that global oil markets are experiencing unexpected pressures on the supply side due to renewed military escalation and maritime disruptions in the region, despite a decline in consumption rates due to the sharp rise in prices.

The agency explained in its monthly report that the markets are facing a significant shortfall of up to 1.8 million barrels per day during the current quarter, which exceeds double the previous forecasts, thus representing the largest quarterly deficit seen in the markets in five years until 2026.

Increasing Pressures

The report indicated that the increasing pressures on the shipping fleet and energy infrastructure have led to spikes in the prices of oil derivatives such as diesel and gasoline, making it more difficult for central banks to control inflation. These high prices prompted the agency to deepen its estimates of a global demand decline of about 50%, reaching 1.6 million barrels per day during the current year, marking the largest annual drop in sales and demand since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Partial Protection

Despite ongoing field tensions, the agency clarified that production losses were less than the bleak scenarios proposed at the onset of the events, thanks to reliance on alternative pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the UAE and the operation of shuttle tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. Global oil production continued its gradual recovery from its lowest levels influenced by increased supply from major countries.

The markets received partial protection from the worsening shock thanks to the structural shift in China, which replaced more than 1.5 million barrels of its daily oil consumption during the second quarter by expanding its fleet of electric vehicles.
