The water crisis in England is no longer just seasonal warnings, as the effects of drought have become clearly visible in rivers, reservoirs, and fields. With the continuation of hot and dry weather, the affected areas have expanded to cover more than two-thirds of the country's area, amid fears of ongoing pressure on water resources in the coming weeks.

The National Drought Group announced that 71.3% of England is now classified as drought-affected areas, after the country experienced one of the driest July months since records began in 1836.

The decision came after regions in the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire, along with Kent, Sussex, Solent, and South Downs, moved into a drought phase, joining other areas that had already entered this phase in England and Wales.

Currently, about 45 million people live in areas classified as drought-affected in England, while more than 27 million people are under water usage restrictions, as the country faces an exceptional summer in terms of heat and drought, with forecasts of a return of the heatwave to wide areas during this week.

Tony Grahling, the head of the National Drought Group, stated that conditions will continue to deteriorate unless the country experiences "heavy and sustained" rainfall. Forecasts indicate that dry weather will persist in most areas during the coming week, coinciding with the fifth heatwave of this year, despite indications of some rain reaching the UK on Sunday.

Grahling warned of the increasing repercussions of the hot and dry weather, particularly on the agricultural sector and the environment, urging residents to conserve water consumption to help maintain available supplies.

The National Drought Group describes the current situation as a "flash drought," a pattern that develops rapidly due to declining rainfall alongside rising temperatures.

The impacts of drought are not limited to water shortages, as the ongoing hot and dry conditions have increased the risk of wildfires. Dozens of firefighters are currently battling a fire in the New Forest area, which has spread over an estimated area of about 247 acres, equivalent to about 140 football fields.

In the agricultural sector, farmers have reported a decline in production after recording the earliest harvest season in about 20 years, while the National Farmers' Union warned that prolonged drought could lead to shortages of certain food products.

In an effort to address the crisis, British Water Minister Emma Hardy stated that the government is working to facilitate farmers in creating more irrigation reservoirs within their farms, aimed at collecting and storing water for use when needed.

Indicators from rivers and reservoirs reveal the extent of the current pressures; only 14% of rivers in England are recording normal water levels, while 22% of them are classified as exceptionally low, including the River Avon in the southwest and the River Ely Ouse in the east.

Water levels in reservoirs have also continued to decline, with most reservoirs across England now below their normal levels, while five reservoirs are classified as "exceptionally low," according to Environment Agency data.

As the heat continues and heavy rainfall is absent, England faces an increasing test of its ability to manage its water resources, while the impacts of drought expand from drinking water to agriculture, the environment, and fire risks.
